Sometimes Radical Hospitality is a Real Pain: A Summer Experiment Reminder

In consultation with the wardens and worship team leaders I have decided to try a different approach to administering Holy Communion just at the 9:30 AM service. This will be an experiment lasting for the rest of the summer.

The new approach is similar to what we did at the ordination service last December and our 50th Anniversary service last month. That is, we will have one communion station in front of the altar rail in order to distribute the holy bread and cup in a more hospitable manner. Since including the offering of gluten-free wafers and grape juice, it has become apparent to us who distribute these items that it takes more time (naturally) to distribute more items. Also, those who wish to have the grape juice still have to ask for it which seems unnecessary and unfair. Please note: people who want the gluten-free wafer should fold their hands together when approaching the priest to indicate that the gluten-free wafer is needed. This is a new approach to helping the priest know what is desired. When it was one or two who needed this he could easily remember. Now, with a growing number of folks needing this choice, he tends to forget – a lot!

With one station in front of the altar rail, people will still be guided by the greeter to come forward now in a single line and to receive the holy bread and cup while standing. Historically, this was always the way to receive Communion not only because standing is the customary liturgical posture of offering thanksgiving

(Eucharist means thanksgiving), but also originally altar rails were placed around the communion table to keep out animals like pets who would wander in and out of open doors especially during the warmer months.

The priest will be in the middle with the wafers; the silver chalice bearer and silver intinction cup bearer with the wine will be on your right as you come forward. The ceramic chalice bearer with the grape juice will be on your left as you come forward. Everyone will stay in a single line to receive the wafer from the priest and then move either right or left depending on which chalice you need. After receiving the cup then please return as usual to your seat using the closest side aisle.

This experiment may be jarring to some who are used to kneeling at the altar rail and seeing it as part of their piety. I don’t mean to infringe upon this practice, but I do see a higher calling that insures none feel left out or excluded from simply receiving communion like everyone else does. Sometimes radical hospitality is a real pain, but it is one of our parish core values which we try to live up to even if it means change which is not always easy.

Of course, we welcome your feedback concerning this experiment. Feel free to share this with me or the wardens or a worship team leader. At the end of the summer we will evaluate this to see if we want to make this a permanent practice.

DINING AT DAVID’S COME JOIN US!
Come join in the good food and fellowship and let someone else do the cooking. Dining at David’s is an informal social event. Your Host/Chefs will provide all the food and also grill hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken for parishioners, family and friends. All ages are welcome and you are encouraged to bring friends. Parishioners make goodwill donations at the event to cover the cost of food and supplies.

The next Dining at David’s BBQ will be on Thursday, July 29th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Our hosts for the evening will be Thomas and Stacey Ferraro. Drop in anytime between 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Please use the sign-up sheet in the narthex this Sunday to sign up so that our Hosts/Chefs can properly plan the meal. Sign up for as many weeks as you want to attend. We look forward to seeing you there!

KINNELON FOOD PANTRY NEEDS OUR HELP: We have received an urgent message from the Kinnelon Food Pantry: items needed – toothpaste, soap, Reynolds Wrap, Ziploc bags of different sizes and household cleaners.

SUMMER SERVICE SCHEDULE Begins    Beginning Sunday June 20th through Sunday, September 5th we will use the SUMMER SERVICE SCHEDULE. Holy Eucharist will be offered at 8:00 am and 9:30 am. Be sure to mark your calendars.
THE “ICED TEA AND LEMONADE HOUR” will also begin on June 20. The Sign-up sheet is in the narthex - won’t you volunteer? All the supplies are provided.
A NOTE ABOUT TABLE MANNERS:   Please know that all are welcome to receive Holy Communion including children. Please follow the greeter’s directions to come forward and stand or kneel at the altar rail as able. You may receive the bread and wine, one or the other, or a simple blessing. If you drink from the chalice, please help the chalice bearer by taking hold of the bottom of the chalice and guiding the cup to your lips. You may also intinct (dip) from the chalice or from the intinction cup offered by the acolyte. If you do not wish to receive the wine, cross your chest with both hands. However you receive, the words for both the bread and the wine will be spoken over you. Please direct any concerns or questions to one of the clergy. We offer grape juice, wine, regular white wafers and gluten-free wafers.  Let the Priest know if you need gluten-free wafers.  This is an attempt to bring everyone in since one of our core parish values is hospitality, this is an attempt to bring everyone in and truly represent “all are welcome all the time”
